Let's get together

Every year we have at least one big team-building adventure, where our entire company joins in, in a day of fun. Because our company is still rather small, it means that we can enjoy a bigger variety of adventures, and this year we opted for a Cape Town boat charter adventure along the Cape coastline.

Ready, aim, shoot!

Our day was planned with a couple of activities for the day, starting off with a boat based clay shoot. I've never done clay shooting, but I thought "how difficult can it be, right?" Turns out, it is much harder than I anticipated. We were separated into two teams: at work it's usually the creatives and suits (otherwise known as marketers) working in groups, but on this day it was creatives and marketers working together against a team of a similar setup.

There are some people just shouldn't be allowed to handle a weapon and Lisa, our receptionist, is one of them. After missing her clay target, Lisa swung the shotgun around, holding it with only one hand, her finger still on the trigger. Now if it was a single shot gun this would be ok, but it was a two shot semi-automatic and Lisa fired a second shot, missing her teammate Craig, by mere millimetres and hitting the water bottle standing next to him instead. Craig wasn't the only one to get a massive fright as the bottle exploded. Sadly, my team came second and although I could claim nothing more than to blame the wind for blowing our chances at winning this, I know that in all honesty it came down to the other team being better shots, and not having Lisa on their team.

Something a little faster he said...

While unwinding on the boat, getting lunch ready and some of the guys' busy fishing, another boat joined us. This one is a little bit faster the skipper said. At speeds exceeding 120 km/ph, I would say that boat was a lot more than a little faster. It was an exhilarating experience moving at such a pace over the water! I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately can't say the same for Ryno, he was more than happy to embark when we got back to the other boat.

Lunch was ready when we got back on the boat, although Ryno looked rather green around the edges and said he would just like a glass of water. The food was divine, including some of the best cheeses I've tasted in a while. We were chatting about work, mocking some people about the funny stuff they've done during the past year (without being mean), and celebrating the fact that this has been our company's most successful year yet.

Desert...

Of course every meal should follow with a desert, and today it was a doughnut, but this was no ordinary doughnut. This was a large inflatable doughnut shaped rubber tube that was towed behind our favourite High Speed Rubber Duck. Luckily the doughnut ride only happened an hour or so after our lunch; otherwise it might have turned out messier than it already was. Most of us ended up in the water, me included. As the boat pulled away, my feet went over my head and I hit the water like a sack of potatoes. Yes of course everybody laughed, including me. You can't help but laugh, since it is quite a sight to see. The only two who managed to stay on was Quinton and Derrick. How on earth they managed that, I wouldn't know, but they seemed to know what they were doing.

Nobody got injured, except for the odd bruise here and there, but nothing serious. Our team building day came to an end after the doughnut rides and we continued on our way back to the V&A Waterfront where the Tigger2Charters base was. It was a most successful team building day and a good example of how good our working relationships were. It wasn't a case of just getting there, doing whatever needed to be done, but enjoying a few laughs with friends.

Nobody ever raves about the Karoo and little Karoo but then again not many people have experienced the magnificent flower extravaganza that occurs when the first rains fall or have ridden an ostrich. The Karoo has a diversity of splendor with Wildlife abound in some of the most exquisite settings. If it’s not wildlife you’re after then the Karoo and little Karoo also have some fantastic hidden spots like the Sex shop which is actually a pub with wonderful service and a quirky nature.

Cape Town itself is one of the most visited cities in Africa. It’s diverse cultures, beauty and relaxed attitude is what brings visitors flocking year in and out and dare we say it’s natural beauty. It is a must see as it is a vibrant city with the lonely Table mountain as its heart. Some fantastic gardens like the Kirstenbosch gardens often have paths that lead to the top of the mountain where you have some of the most amazing panoramic views of the surrounding city, countryside and ocean but remember to take lots of liquids when doing this climb as it is a mountain after all.

We decided to take a trip to the Addo Elephant National Park, we are regulars at the Kruger National Park, and decided to have a change of scenery in a different part of South Africa. Addo Elephant National Park is situated close to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape and is one of the countrys’ twenty national parks.

Founded in 1931 the park was created to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area. There were many wild elephants in this area for centuries, but hunting over the years had brought the numbers tumbling until there was only 11 left – one hunter, Major JP Pretorius is known to have shot 114 elephants between 1919 and 1920!

Over the years, and a few teething problems, such as elephants escaping through the inadequate fence that surrounded the park and again being killed by hunters and farmers whose stock they destroyed, some elephants were even killed by being struck by trains on the surrounding train line. The development by Graham Armstrong in 1954 of the “Armstrong Fence” put a halt to the escapes and parts of this fence are still used in the Park today. There was only one elephant that ever broke out of the Park, Harpoor was the dominant bull from 1944 to 1968, he had a nick in his ear which was believed to have been caused by a hunters bullet, which would explain why he had a strong dislike to humans. He was deposed from his dominant status by Lanky, a rival bull. Once Harpoor was “dethroned” he escaped through the “Armstrong Fence” and unfortunately had to be shot.

The first tourists entered the park in 1981 and the population of elephants has grown ever since, today there are over 400 elephants in the park. Bulls from the Kruger National Park were introduced to bring new genes into Addo National Parks herd and there have been new calves each season.

As with all the National Parks in South Africa, only animals that were natural to the areas are reintroduced into the park, other animals in the park include Cape buffalo, black rhino as well as a variety of antelope species. Lion and spotted hyena has also recently been re-introduced to the area. A species unique to the area is the flightless dung beetle; you will see lots of signs asking that you watch out for these beetles and not to run them over as with 400+ elephants there is an awful lot of dung!!

The park receives over 110,000 visitors each year; 54% of these are International people, with German, Dutch and British nationals making up the majority.

The main entrance as well as two looped tourist roads in the park is tarred while the others are gravelled.

When it comes to the national routes, "just down the road" can be between 200 and 300 kms, so best to fill up whenever you are getting a little low and you happen to be passing a petrol station. Many of these stations are open 24-hours and will include restaurants, shops, bathrooms, etc.

There are no left turns permitted on a red light unless there is a yield sign that specifically allows it. Otherwise you have to wait for the green.

THE arrival of winter normally brings a chill to local car rental companies. Not so this year.

With the Confederations Cup two weeks away, car rental firms expect brisk business. The British and Irish Lions tour, which got under way on Saturday, amplifies this optimism.

Avis Rent A Car CEO Wayne Duvenage says these two world sport events should boost the car rental industry — which is hurting from the economic downturn — by up to 10%. The firm has seen a spike in bookings as a result of the Confederations Cup and Lions tour, with foreign inbound business more than doubling that of the same period last year.

Dawn Nathan-Jones, CEO of Europcar, formerly known as Imperial Car Rental, says the company has experienced “healthy forward bookings” due to these locally hosted international events.

Some officials, Nathan-Jones says, are already in the country and are hiring vehicles, especially the luxury and minibus sort.

She says Springbok Atlas, a sister company that belongs to Imperial Group, is fully booked — clear evidence of high demand for coaches.

Nathan-Jones said the Indian Premier League (IPL) had stoked demand for rented vehicles.

Ray Booth, MD of Budget Rent A Car, says demand for the company’s rental cars emanates more from the Lions tour than from the Confederations Cup, helping boost its reservations.

About 50000 British and Irish visitors are heading to SA for the 10-match Lions tour.

There is no indication yet how many foreign visitors the Confederations Cup will attract. It kicks off on June 14. This year, winter, normally a bad season for the car rental business, has turned out to be a boon for it.

Booth says this period is usually quiet, suggesting that the business can comfortably accommodate rising demand when it occurs.

Duvenage echoes this: “June is normally a low period for car rental businesses and rental companies have spare capacity to be used in these periods, so it is good for us and the entire tourism industry that these big sporting events are taking place in the winter.” Reservations, Duvenage says, are coming in. “We have not sold out yet.”

Avis Rent A Car, he says, is flexible in moving cars to areas where the demand is high. It has moved 700 cars from Cape Town to Johannesburg, which is where most of the soccer action will take place. The company has placed an order for 100 new vehicles to cover the expected rental demand.

The Confederations Cup will be staged in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Bloemfontein and Rustenburg, and matches are split equally among these cities.

Nathan-Jones says her company too is “flexible” in moving vehicles around quickly and, as an added benefit, has access to vehicles through Imperial Group’s network of dealerships. “We use dealerships where we can to get maximum optimisation of fleet,” says Nathan-Jones, affirming that Europcar has been ready for the sport events for some time.

Nathan-Jones says Europcar has ordered some new luxury cars and minibuses. But the company is not keen on buying fleets of new vehicles for an event that will last just a few weeks.

This does not bode well for new vehicle sales, which could have benefited if car rental companies started buying vehicles in large numbers as a result of SA’s mid-year sports feast.

Bill Stephens, a spokesman for Volkswagen SA, says he expects no change in vehicle sales as a result of these sport events, noting that car hire companies are likely to retain vehicles for a longer period.

Duvenage says the Confederations Cup will not help the group prepare for the 2010 Soccer World Cup because the two soccer tournaments have little in common from the company’s perspective. “The 2010 event will be a big one for us,” says Duvenage, because it is “vastly bigger and spread countrywide.”

Booth disagrees, saying the IPL, Confederations Cup and Lions tour serve as “dry runs” for next year’s event.

Duvenage says the length of rental will increase over the duration of the tournaments to more than two weeks, whereas the average now is around five days.

JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 29 — “You will never drive this way again in your life,” Cullen says.

A driving teacher offers tips on the South African exam. Letting the car roll back while stopping or starting means instant failure.

Cullen, a laconic fellow with disheveled hair and a cigarette sagging from his lips, is maneuvering a clapped-out Toyota down a suburban Johannesburg street. He yanks his hand brake up at every stop. He lowers it only after he has hit the gas and the Toyota is straining forward like a leashed Labrador after a biscuit. Cullen swivels constantly in search of cars behind him, cars in his side mirrors, cars in every alley, cars at every intersection.

Occasionally, he watches the road ahead.

“I need a drink,” he says.

Cullen is a South African driving instructor. You would drink, too. His job is to teach people how to pass South Africa’s driver’s license examination, a trial of the country’s K53 method of defensive driving. Herein lies a problem, for the K53 method resembles normal driving about as much as Snoop Dogg resembles Perry Como.

But not the only problem. Securing a South African driver’s license is not as simple as passing the K53 test, which is not simple at all. It also requires that one apply for the license, a bureaucratic process so daunting that it set off riots this year. It necessitates eye examinations before applying for a license and before the road test — and all over again, should one fail. It often demands that one game the driving examiner, who may wish to flunk the hapless applicant to meet the day’s failure quota.

It is helpful to learn South Africa’s extensive and sometimes charming traffic code, which sometimes rates children between 6 and 13 as one-third of a passenger and includes a road sign that depicts a stick-figure man astride an ostrich.

If one does all this, one can proceed to take the K53, and flunk on the merits. For the K53 is just part of the Catch-22 that faces every aspiring motorist here: To drive legally, one very sensibly needs a license. Except that licenses often seem impossible to get.

All right, not impossible. They are nevertheless very difficult. In a two-year period that ended in July, the national transport ministry says, 1.5 million people applied for driver’s licenses. Fewer than 4 in 10 actually received them. Over all, the government says, South Africa has about 8.5 million motor vehicles and 7.8 million licensed drivers. The nation’s transport minister said in July that so few motorists get licenses because they do not study hard enough for their exams, and he could be right: the K53 is hardly a no-brainer.

Based on Britain’s national driving exam, the K53 effectively requires an applicant to imagine that he is driving a live claymore mine under assault by guerrillas in bumper cars. The hand brake must be engaged silently at all stops (ratchet-clicking is strictly forbidden), and all mirrors must be checked every seven seconds. Points are deducted for glancing at the gearshift, driving too slowly, failing to ensure that head- and taillights are securely attached, failing to check the play on the clutch pedal, failing to look beneath the car for leaks and several score other sins.

There are many ways to fail instantly, including permitting one’s automobile to roll backward, even an inch, while stopping or starting.

Road safety experts hail the K53 as a textbook lesson in defensive driving. True, some of the minutiae are “perhaps overkill,” said Gary Ronald, the spokesman for the South African Automobile Association. “But it does work.”

In practice, he acknowledged, it appears that very few people pass the K53 on the first try. South African drivers tend to throw caution not just to the winds but into a deep ravine, often with a derisive farewell blow of the horn. Red lights are frequently treated like a matador’s red cape, especially by drivers of so-called combis, minivans that move a vast share of the population to and fro each day.

Even though the K53 method has been used for a dozen years — or perhaps because so few drivers have obtained licenses — traffic accidents and deaths are rising fast, to 15,400 fatalities last year, up nearly 9 percent from 2005. The fatality rate per mile traveled, the best measure of road safety, is five times that in the United States, which is in turn higher than in most developed nations.

Another reason may be that the exam is stacked against some applicants. The $25 fee to schedule a driver’s exam is split between the national and local governments. Some localities, Mr. Ronald said, have become so fond of that easy money that they are notorious for flunking applicants, apparently in the expectation that they will pony up $25 more to reapply.

And many might, were it easy to reapply. It is not. License applicants are supposed to apply by telephone, which has proven less than successful. “I have attempted to call the call center — in quick succession — 271 times. Not joking,” one miserable soul wrote in November on the Internet site drivers.com. “I have gotten though to music and voice prompts 18 times. Each time this lasts for three minutes, before you are disconnected.”

Early this year the government installed a computer system to manage auto-related matters. The system promptly broke down. In the ensuing chaos, supplicants for driver’s licenses began to line up outside motor vehicle offices before sunrise, waiting hours to get a precious application form. In July the police rushed to one Johannesburg office after throngs of furious would-be drivers tried to break down the doors to apply for licenses.

“People seem to judge by the long queues that the system is not working,” a spokesman for the Transport Ministry said at the time. He added, soothingly, “It’s not true.”

To be sure, South Africans’ licensing misery is, in one odd way, a sign of progress. “A lot of the backlog is caused by the huge upsurge in the number of formerly disadvantaged people who can now afford to buy a car,” said Les Stephenson, the motoring editor of the Independent Online Web site. “Unfortunately, the traffic department just can’t keep up.”

Indeed. In one instance sure to warm the heart of any applicant, a heroic woman recently locked herself and her two children, ages 8 and 2, inside a Cape Town motor vehicle office after bureaucrats refused to hand over her new driver’s license on the grounds that they were closed — 15 minutes before the posted quitting time of 3 p.m.

Few drivers are so persistent. With genuine licenses so hard to obtain, a growing black market offers bootleg ones, usually obtained from corrupt motor vehicle officials, for $150 to $450. In the last two years, investigators found more than 42,000 fake licenses on the government’s own computer registry, and arrested a thousand people, including scores of bureaucrats, on charges of subverting the licensing process.

That total does not include undetected scams, which are legion, and fakes sold by forgers and thieves. Among those caught in the act is the speaker of the South African Parliament, Baleka Mbete-Kgositsile, nabbed in 1997, but not prosecuted, for procuring a phony license from a government testing center.

Ms. Mbete had a ready explanation. She was, she said, too busy to stand in line.

Four-way-stops are commonly found at the quieter intersections – the first vehicle to arrive has priority. On roundabouts, give way to the right, although this is often overlooked and it is wise to proceed with caution.
Wearing of seat belts is compulsory. All occupants of a vehicle are required to wear seatbelts whilst traveling, if you are caught without you will be subject to a fine.
Using hand-held phones while driving is against the law – use a vehicle phone attachment or hands-free kit, if you want to speak on your mobile phone.

The general speed limit on national highways, urban freeways and other major routes is 120km/h (75mph).
On secondary (rural) roads it is 100km/h (60mph).
In built-up areas it is usually 60km/h (35mph) unless otherwise indicated.
Check the road signs and obey the speed limit at all times
Speed limits are maximum speeds. If it is raining, misty or the road is congested, reduce speed.
Reduce speed near areas where there is pedestrian activity.
